NICE TO MEET YOU
My name is Sonja and I’m a photographer based on the West Coast of the US. I’ve set a personal goal to travel internationally once a year when I can, because I love learning and observing different places and cultures. I spend a lot of my time running this business, but I also enjoy exploring design of all kinds, being active outside, sharing meals with people I love, reading, and hunting for the next best danish.
PHILOSOPHY
People-watching is one of my favorite past-times. I'm a listener, an observer. One reason I’ve always been drawn to photography is that it gives me an avenue to communicate some of the things I notice that I wouldn’t otherwise know how to share. I'm excited by the potential that even just one photo has— one image can capture an entire novel's worth of story and also somehow force you to appreciate a singular, simple detail that would otherwise be lost in a second as it passes on to the next. I do my best work when I'm given enough freedom to wander and capture things as they unfold, not as they're staged or forced. I love working with people who see our time as an opportunity to craft something beautiful together, because good photos are about so much more than my experience or my artistic eye. While those are important— they contribute greatly to my own personal style and ability to work well on a wedding day— what really makes me excited is what's on the other side of the lens, because after all, I'm documenting the magic that is you.
One thing I really love about my job is the complexity of a wedding. There's such depth and extreme variety of emotions that occur on that one single day, and I'm honored to witness and exist in the midst of it. Most often capturing beautiful and artful photos takes time, so be sure to allow plenty of it.
My approach is mainly photojournalistic, though I do make small suggestions and give some direction during portraits to help my clients look & feel natural and relaxed.
I am drawn to opportunities that allow me to document stories of raw emotion and relationship; showing reality in a beautiful, artistic way. Whether I'm photographing a wedding day or a styled conceptual subject, my work and perspective convey ideas that I find meaningful. Think our styles would work well together?
